Spring Cleaning: How To Keep Chi From Stagnating In Your Home & Life

Spring Cleaning: How To Keep Chi From Stagnating In Your Home & Life

Chi is universal energy. It's the energy that permeates everything around us.

Chi needs to keep flowing and moving. Stuck energy is not good for your body or your home. Just like we need to express ourselves and move our bodies to keep energy moving, we also need to keep our homes fresh and clear. Some ways to keep chi flowing in your home:

- Move furniture! this is one of my favorite things to do. I am a big fan of owning lots of easy to move pieces that are on casters or light enough to move myself. Having an open space layout helps with this, but you can also move pieces from room to room. Versatile pieces like stools, benches, and baskets can be easily moved. A stool used as a seat in a home office can become a nightstand, an end table, an entry table or be paired with a matching stool and topped with a piece of wood or glass to become a table.

- Get rid of what no longer serves you. I know you've heard of Marie Kondo and The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. - there's a reason why this book is such a success! Imagine your home only filled with things that spark joy, it really can be that simple. I also like the "one in, one out rule". Whenever I bring a new piece into my home (or wardrobe) I get rid of something. This doesn't always work, but it's a nice guideline to keep you on track.

- Keep your space clean and organized. I could write a whole book on this subject. You don't have to be a "neat freak" to have a clean and organized home. Get rid of the clutter. Hire a weekly cleaner. Spend a day, a week, a month, whatever it takes to create the systems you need so that everything has a place. It's cool if you are more on the bohemian side of the spectrum and your home looks chic with a few things scattered about. But leave it at a few things. All papers, clothes and objects should have their own home: either on display or stowed away out of site.

If you are interested in this idea of energy in the home, read some books on Feng Shui, it's a really fun topic!

If you want to really take this to the next level, hire a Feng Shui designer to come makeover your space. My friend Jennifer is an awesome Feng Shui designer

If you want to read something short and sweet that focuses on chi as a more wholistic, spiritual concept, check out this post by Belinda Davidson.

** More posts on spring cleaning coming up throughout the month of March. While I believe this should be a year round focus, I love the attention cleanliness and organization gets this time of year. Spring is (currently) my favorite season! **
